New App for Renovators

There are literally thousands of apps to help make renovating easier for the home renovator. But now there’s a new one available for those of us who want to incorporate timber in our homes. And let’s face it, timber floor boards are the one element nearly every home owner desires at the moment.

Dulux Colour Award Winners Announced

A big Congratulations to Mim Design for receiving the Grand Prix award with their Lexus Design Pavillion. Judges awarded the prize based on the use of subtle ombre colour appearing to ‘come off the wall’, which flat colour alone cannot achieve. With a stunning alignment to a French Impressionist feel the project was a great example of colour expression. This entry fell into the “Installation and Events” category which was a new category for the Dulux Colour Awards this year. The judges said this project was a clear standout. Rebalancing the harsh metallic of a Lexus car, the gentle palette helps visitors understand the softness within. The subtle ombre Dulux Leek and Coral Atoll was used to great effect, providing a dimensional impact which flat colour alone couldn’t achieve. The sage green gives the illusion of a floating sea with the floral ceiling display a beautiful upside down “Monet’s Garden”. Truly angelic, the space would be lovely to enjoy a champagne trackside.

If you follow my blog, you would know that I was a finalist in the Commercial Exterior category with my Warringah Creative Space project. Unfortunately I didn’t win (not that I was expecting to). Craig Tan Architects won this category with their Brompton Pavilion. Judges comments included the Brompton Pavilion created a dynamic display of colour within a sparse landscape. The 3D outer framing provided a sneak preview of vibrant colour. The structure balanced external, internal and in-between spaces through thoughtful use of colour. The palette combines both muted and bright shades highlighting the unusual structural aspects, including bright oranges and reds in Dulux Circus and Red Clown.

Caring for your Deck

In Australia, we love our decks. There’s nothing better than an outdoor space with timber underfoot. We really feel like we’re living the dream entertaining outdoors on our decks. But the maintenance is a pain. To really look after our timber, it needs to be treated and cleaned on a regular basis. And at this time of year, it’s perfect for doing that. So I was pleased to see that Cabot’s have released a new timber wash designed to refresh the decking in between oil coats.

Oiling the deck

A wash down with this product helps remove dirt, dust, bird droppings (love the magpies singing on my deck, but hate the mess) and other hard to remove items to maintain its “good as new” appearance.

Maggie

That will be better than sweeping, hosing and still not being happy. It will brighten up the area for the autumn entertaining season, before it gets too cold to be outdoors. It’s much more gentle on your timber than normal household cleaners.

Back Deck

Cabot’s Deck Wash is available from your local hardware store and a 1 litre bottle will give you about 6 washes. Guess what we’re doing this weekend?

Addicted to Renovating

Do you follow The Interiors Addict? Jen Bishop started her blog four years ago and it has quickly become a fabulous resource of all things Interiors.

Last month Jen took on a new venture or sister site called Reno Addict to help quench our growing thirst for all things to do with renovating.

I’m thrilled that Jen and her offsider Olivia, featured my own renovation on this new site. You can read all about our californian bungalow renovation. Thank you ladies.

Bright Colours on Your Home

I recently contributed to an article on house colours for the Domain website. Most of us want our houses to look like all the other houses around and we certainly notice if someone has decided to paint their home a bright colour. Is it wrong?

Bright and Colourful Exterior chosen by Inside Out Colour and Design

No of course it’s not wrong, you can have whatever colour you desire but you do need to consider carefully if you want your house to be known as the “purple house” for instance or if you are happy for it to stand out in a sea of greys and taupes.

My theory is that as long as the combination of colours works together then the overall effect will be great. Unlike this house which I featured 5 years ago. It still hasn’t had a coat of paint.

Armadillo&Co Indoor Outdoor Rugs

Armadillo&Co recently launched their new Indoor Outdoor Rug Collection with a soiree at the design studios of Landscape Designer, Adam Robinson.

The studio was packed with many from the industry trying to get a first hand look (and feel – they were soft) of the new rugs. They even gave one away, but alas I was not the lucky winner.

I loved the swing tables holding the food down the centre of the studio.

I think these rugs will be a welcome addition to the Armadillo&Co range and will provide some warmth underfoot for those outdoor entertaining rooms.

The Selling Season Is Here

Have you noticed the burgeoning real estate section in your local paper at the moment? Or the number of For Sale or Auction signs around your neighbourhood?

And a couple of “my” houses have gone on the market. I selected the external colour scheme for this house in Willoughby back in May and it will go to Auction at the beginning of November.

Pigeon Pair or Toucan Triplet

As I walk around my neighbourhood I get a little thrill of excitement when I see a house receiving some tender loving care. And if this love is being slapped on from a paint can I can’t wait to see the finished result. I wonder which colour they will paint it? Will they paint the Barge Boards in the same colour as the gutters or will they paint them the same as the eaves?

So I was quite excited when I walked past a gracious large home with scaffolding all around and the painters working madly.

This house was receiving some TLC

This house was receiving some TLC

But soooo disappointed when a few days later I walked past again and noticed the home was being painted the same colour as it’s neighbour. As if that wasn’t bad enough it was the same colour as the neighbour next to the neighbour too! Three houses in a row all the same colour. Well Ok, I didn’t have my fan deck with me and I wasn’t about to jump the fences and go up to the houses to see if they were infact the exact same colour. But in the early morning light they were pretty darned close for this trained colour consultant’s eye.

Painting the same colour

Painting the same colour

There really is no excuse for this. I understand people drive past a house and admire it’s colour but to paint exactly the same as your neighbour is downright unadventurous. You just have to look at the number of colours available from any of the big paint companies here in Australia to realise there is plenty of choice. Dulux, Taubmans, Wattyl, Resene, Bristol, Haymes, Porters, Murobond, the list is endless. And if you have trouble making a decision, call in an expert. You really don’t need to copy the house next door and the one next door to that no matter how much you like their choice. Besides you want your house to stand out, not tell your visitors we’re the third green house from the top! Check out my other considerations when Choosing an External Colour Scheme for some more ideas.

Amazing Before and After

Whenever I am asked to consult on exterior colours, I will check out the home on Google Street View.

This assists in preparing me for the type of house and construction so I can make sure I take the correct tools of trade. I can also have a look at the neighbouring properties and sometimes formulate some ideas prior to arriving for the consultation.

Home as it is now

Home as it is now

This happened last week, when a previous client phoned to make an appointment for their rental property at Palm Beach. The client explained that the previous owner had been inspired by the Pastis Hotel in St Tropez. She sent me photos of the home as it is now and also a link to the hotel website.

But the biggest surprise came when I checked it out on Google Street View. Wow, what a transformation!

Turn your home from drab to fab

We all love a good before and after shot. It’s amazing what can be done with different houses and rooms. One of the easiest ways to change your home from drab to fab is with a coat of paint.

Exterior of home before

A recent study of 1,000 Australian homeowners found that one quarter (24%) of people try to hide rooms away behind closed doors when visitors arrive, and 31% claim that their spare room has become a useless dumping ground. 80% of us would like to change their homes’ appearance and 57% don’t use certain rooms as much as they would like to as a result.
