So many times I’ve been called in to help a new homeowner who has moved all their furniture from the previous house into their new house, only to find that it doesn’t fit.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to take measurements and prepare a floor plan prior to moving in.
I recently spent a morning with clients who are downsizing. They have purchased a new two seater sofa for the casual living area but dearly love their comfortable lounge chairs and were desperate to bring them from their old home.
I had prepared floor plans to scale and worked out where the chairs could sit. But the clients were still worried it would look a bit squishy. The chairs (if they will fit) are to be reupholstered in a fabric that suits the new sofa and the style of their new home.
So we took some towels and a tape measure to the apartment and folded them up to the size of the furniture. We then shuffled the towels around the area until we had a configuration we liked.
Fortunately the clients purchased the dining suite that had been styled into the apartment for sale so we placed them on the towels to get the feel of the solidity of furniture in the space.
The old chairs have been collected by the upholsterer and will be given a new lease of life. My clients are thrilled as they really couldn’t find anything as comfortable as their favourite chairs.
Speaking of upholsterers, did you know they can also alter sofas? They are so clever. They can take off the arms and convert your three seater sofa into a two seater. They can also change the look of the arms so they are not so bulky and put new cushions on the seats and backs to give a more streamlined look. You don’t have to throw out the old and bring in the new. But you do need to make sure it will fit before you move it in!
